Over the last week or so there have been a number of thefts in the Chichester and Bognor areas. At Chichester, in the shopping area, ladies are having their purses stolen from their bags whilst their attention is elsewhere. In the Bognor town centre and surrounding area, there have been a number of people, both men and women, who have had their handbags and wallets snatched.

Please alert your members, and ask them to take care of their belongings, particularly whilst in these areas. and to report anything suspicious to the police immediately.

This message is for all Neighbourhood Watch Co-ordinators and EARTH Project members and it will be repeated.

Over the years there have been many scams both by post as well as email. Trading Standards has asked that you are made aware of a recent occurance. Consumers have been receiving unsolicited calls, plus one report of a letter, from someone in South Africa who says that the person has won £600 worth of holiday vouchers. The caller then asks for some personal data as well as whether the person is alone. When consumers start asking questions or become suspicious, the caller hangs up. Please warn all of your members. Whether these calls are genuine or not has not been established.

This message is for all N/watch co-ordinators and EARTH Project members and
it will be repeated.

Over the past nine days the police have received 36 reports from the public
of suspect callers at the door. The majority have been tarmaccers but there
have also been roofers, gardeners, knife sharpeners as well as Ordnance
Survey, RSPCA funrun collectors and a man wanting money and another wanting
water.

Please alert your members as there seems to be an influx of such callers at
present and ask them to be on their guard when someone calls.

This message is to all NHW co-ordinators throughout the division and will be
repeated. I have been asked by PC Berriman to advise you of the following.
The Police have received several reports of individuals being contacted by
phone or by letter informing them that they have won monies abroad, they are
asked in the first instance to send monies in advance of the winning cheque
being issued and sent. This is quite clearly a 'Scam' unfortunately some
elderly people have already been 'conned'. The Police advice in this
instance is to take no action should you or your members be contacted, other
than telephoning the Police to make them aware. Message ends

This message is to all co-ordinators in the Chichester Sector and will be repeated. I have been asked to advise you that there has been a recent increase in burglaries as a result of people leaving windows and doors open and unlocked, probably as a result of the good weather. The burglaries have been in the Chichester area. Please advise your members that they need to be extra mindful of the security of their homes, especially when leaving downstairs window open. I would also ask that any reports of suspicious people should be reported immediately to the Police and not left to the following day.
